Verde Canyon Railroad – It’s the Journey, Not the Destination

Clarkdale, Arizona.

Regular readers of this journal have seen that when I have an opportunity, I “ride the rails”. Though steam is my preference, I have no objection to a diesel-electric tractor. It was only a matter of time before I found myself headed to the Verde Valley to ride a popular scenic route through some of Arizona’s canyon country. Continue reading

Cellpic Sunday – 14 April 2019

Buckeye, Arizona.

It isn’t every day that we get to ride in a classic car like this 1927 Chevrolet. One of our occasional pastimes here in Buckeye is to visit some of the newer real estate developments to check out the newest designed homes being built. We are realistic at this point in our retirement, we aren’t going to make any rash decisions on a new house purchase. Continue reading

Dwarf Car Museum – 11/16th Scale Wonders

Maricopa, Arizona.

I often find myself watching programs about automobiles, usually that’s on the Motor Trend Channel (formerly Velocity). In recent months, I discovered Jay Leno’s Garage on CNBC. Jay feeds my addiction for classic and unique automobiles and as it happened, one of the features had Jay and Brad Garrett visiting a museum in Maricopa, Arizona. The story featured a collection of vehicles built by Ernie Adams and Gene Tweedy. These hand-made one-off classic cars are about 11/16th the size of the original vehicles they are modeled after. In the segment, Jay and Brad were sandwiched into a dwarf convertible that they drove around on the nearby streets of Maricopa. Continue reading

Cellpic Sunday – 7 April 2019

Buckeye, Arizona.

This week’s Cellpic Sunday was borrowed from this week’s Travel Tuesday post. That’s why it may look familiar to regular readers. I’ve been less likely to take my camera on hikes, especially more strenuous ones as it’s another piece of expensive stuff I have to hang onto and be careful I don’t damage should I fall. That cell phone sits in my front pocket, only a few moments from being able to grab and take an image. Continue reading

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge – Weathered

Navajo Nation.

This post is quite tardy, and I apologize to those who commented on previous posts to whom I owe a reply. I do have an excuse for my lack of participation in my normal operations. As it is being written, we are sailing on the Norwegian Star somewhere between Acapulco, Mexico and Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala. The Internet access is available, but it is expensive on the ship. Besides I am “on vacation”, gathering material for future posts, visiting with family who are also traveling with us, and generally staying disconnected. For Photo Challenge #38, Ann-Christine asks us to share something weathered. She shares some of her selections here. Continue reading

Lost Creek to Valley Vista – A Challenging Hike for an Old Man

Buckeye, Arizona.

As this post is being written, I will soon cross into my seventh decade on the planet. Even though I’ve put on a few pounds in the last two years, I’m still well under my lifetime average weight and I am working to keep from going back to where I was for most of my life. The “new me” is off the prescription meds I needed for cholesterol and blood pressure and I am passing my FAA flight physicals with “flying colors.” I owe a lot of my newfound good health to a much more active lifestyle since I retired. My sedentary job gave way to daily trips to the gym where I put in both time and effort, to often daily walks, and when in Arizona, to taking up hiking. Continue reading

Cellpic Sunday – 31 March 2019

Cave Creek, Arizona.

But I Digress… as this is being published on the last day of March, I want to take a moment to thank all of you who have followed this humble journal for the last six years. It was March 18, 2013 when my first blog post appeared here at Journeys With Johnbo. Since then, I’ve published just under 850 entries. In the next few months, we’ve got lots more travels to share including some new international stops we will be gathering starting this week on a new cruise adventure. Stay Tuned for More! Now, on to this week’s Cellpic Sunday post… Continue reading
