Weekly Photo Challenge – One (When two become one)

Wailua Falls

Kauai, HI

This week’s photo challenge is “One.” From the Challenge post:

This week, we want to see photos that focus on one thing. Maybe you’ve got a stark photo of a single tree silhouetted against the setting sun, or a lone sandpiper wandering the beach as waves crash.

Since I appear to have a real problem with following the Photo Challenges exactly, I have yet again twisted the rules a bit. Continue reading

The Beaches of Kauai – Swim, Snorkel, Surf, or Simply Sunbathe

Lifeguard station and one of the picnic ramadas at Salt Pond Beach

Kauai, HI

As I write this, my wife Lynn and I have returned to Fargo for the Christmas holiday. Compared to the last couple of days, it’s a balmy 2 degrees F (-16 C). Snow flurries are drifting slowly by the window, settling on the large evergreen tree in the yard. The scene outside our window is worthy of a Currier and Ives lithograph. This week’s gallery of photographs features some of the beaches on the island of Kauai. Continue reading

Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge – Home to Boobies and Shearwaters

Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse

Kauai, HI

As I write this, the continental United States is just recovering from an unseasonably cold arctic blast. Northern tier states saw lows in the -40 degrees F (-40 C). Even desert areas of Arizona saw frost warnings and temperatures in the 20s F (-6 C). It seems fitting, then for me to feature a recent visit to the island of Kauai in our 50th state of Hawaii. McBryde National Botanical Garden – A Rainy Day on Kauai

Koloa, HI

Collocated with the Allerton National Botanical Garden, the McBryde Garden was the first of the four National Botanical Gardens on Kauai. In the Lāwa`I Valley, near the south shore, the garden houses the largest collection of Hawaiian flora in the world. The Lāwa`I stream winds its way through the floral gallery. Continue reading

Port Allen Hawai’i – Flying a Powered Glider

Port Allen Airport (PAK), Kauai, Hawai’i

I didn’t get much sleep the night before, thinking about the next day’s scheduled activity. A few days ago, at the suggestion of a friend, I reserved an early morning sight-seeing and instruction flight in a powered glider. Continue reading
